decided to pay homage to the classic noir detective thrillers of
Dashiell Hammett this week with "A Most Holy Man," aka "The Maltese
Skull." Sam and Dean got roped into a convoluted plot about a missing
skull filled with sketchy characters like a mob boss, a collector of
religious artifacts, a fake cop, a priest and a sexy femme fatale who
was obviously going to be the villain because they always are.
Supernatural Recap: Sam and Dean's Search for the Blood of a Most Holy Man>>>
It was a fun little adventure and, surprisingly, it ended on a hopeful note as the Winchesters got what they needed and seemed to believe they could actually stop all of the monsters from doing bad things. If I know this show, that means something truly awful will be happening soon to remind them that their work, while important, will never permanently stop all evil.
"A Most Holy Man" also had some optimistic lines about doing your best in an imperfect world and, in what was easily the best moment of the episode, Dean's response to Sam asking what he would do if the Impala was stolen.See Photos from This Episode>>>
Here are the best lines from this week's episode. "The Internet: You're not just for porn anymore."
-Dean to Sam"This isn't a perfect world we're trying to save and if I'm not perfect trying to save it, then so be it."
-Dean to Sam"You've taken a lot of shots to the head lately. I know that Disney princess hair gives you some padding, but..."
-Dean to Sam"All the time I hear people saying the world's not perfect. And they're right, it's not. But do you use that as an excuse? Do you use it to excuse your own sins, your failings and your laziness? Do you use it to give a bad man power because the world's not perfect? Or do you work? Do you try and improve things in whatever way you can? The world will never be perfect. If good men do good things, it can be better. Every day can get better."
-Father Lucca to Sam and Dean
Sam: "If somebody stole the Impala, what would you do?"
Dean: "Murder. I'd murder them all. ... There would be torture first. There'd be a lot of torture. And it would end up with death. If I can't have it, nobody can.""Do you think we could ever change things? I mean, really change things? Stop all the monsters, all the bad?"
